Abayomi Orimoloye (Yomi)

My name is Abayomi Orimoloye (Yomi) I am a Nigerian emerging visual artist and engineer living and working in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. In 2019, I obtained a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from the University of Ottawa. I developed an interest in drawing at a young age, drawing images from cartoons and biology textbooks. At 16, I moved from Lagos to Toronto where I attended high school and enrolled in an art course that allowed me to express myself in new ways and acquire new skills which I have been dedicating to developing ever since. Today, I work with a variety of media including drawing, acrylic and oil painting, digital and mixed media. Inspired by my education background in science and my love for animation, I employ the use of simple geometric patterns and shapes, bright and vibrant complementary colors and bold compositions to create figurative pieces that discuss and explore human complexities and nuances. In my practice, I am particularly interested in the use of abstraction on the human form to contemplate identity. I am deeply fascinated by topics of individuality and stories of people who, like me, often find themselves outside the confines of societal, cultural and/or religious expectations. My aim is to depict the complications and joys of living life and growing up in an old world that often feels new. Through my work, I journal my experiences as I seek to establish a relationship between myself, others, and the world around me.
